SALT LAKE CITY – May 7, 2024 – The Utah 1033 Foundation has presented three students, all children of Utah law enforcement officers, with $5,000 each in 2024 Leadership Awards, in honor of both the individual students and Utah’s fallen law enforcement officers. An Awards ceremony was held on May 7th, 2024 in Salt Lake City.
“Clearly, the tragic loss of Santaquin Police Sergeant Bill Hooser just two days ago is very much on our minds during this year’s ceremony,” said Utah 1033 Foundation president Dave Kaufman. “Our hearts are with his family and the Santaquin Police Department. These annual Leadership Awards are celebratory in that they give young members of Utah’s peace officer community a leg up in pursuing their higher education goals but, just as importantly, they serve as a remembrance of Utah’s fallen peace officer heroes. We must never forget those who make the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe, and that commitment is felt especially strongly today.”
High school and college students from around the State applied for the 2024 Leadership Awards by submitting an essay in response to a prompt that asked them to grapple with issues surrounding the homeless crisis in the United States. The winning students were selected based on their essays and for their demonstrated academic achievement and rigor.
The recipients of the 2024 Fallen Hero Leadership Awards are:
- Teagan Biehler; Teagan’s father serves with the Bountiful Police Department
- Jessica Markland; Jessica’s father serves with the UTA Police Department
- Sienna Wyckoff; Sienna’s father serves with the West Valley City Police Department
“The Utah 1033 Foundation is very, very proud of this year’s recipients,” Kaufman said. “They rose to the top of a competitive applicant pool, and we know they will go on to do great things.”
Zions Bank hosted the presentation of the Leadership Award program by The Utah 1033 Foundation on May 7th, 2024 at the Zions Bank Founders Room in Salt Lake City.
“We’d like to express our gratitude to Zions Bank for hosting the ceremony again this year, and to our wonderful donors,” Kaufman said. “The Utah 1033 Foundation couldn’t deliver its programs without their amazing generosity.”
